Walks in Durham
County Durham is located in the North East of England and spans from the North Sea inland to reach the North Pennines. Across the region you'll come across some gorgeous dales - often less populated with walkers than the better known Yorkshire Dales.
In addition to a wealth of countryside walks, there is also the historic city of Durham to visit. A couple of walks in Durham that you might want to consider are Walk ID 322: Durham City which is a 5 mile walk taking in both the city centre, the river and nearby woodland areas; and for a shorter and easier option, try Walk ID 700 which takes in all the banks of the river along the Durham Peninsula.
Back to the coast, the full length of the Durham Coast has a waymarked long distance path, which takes you through some National Trust land and has some fabulous flowers - at the right time of year of course. Moving inland, there are numerous walks to be found along the River Wear (many of them again following part of the long distance route (the Weardale Way).
Then it's the turn of the dales, Teesdale (e.g. Walks 279, 320, 1174 and 386) and the lesser known Weardale (Walks 323 and 1110). Both of these dales stretch inland to reach the edge of the North Pennines and stretches of the Pennine Way pass through them. Teesdale is well know for its walking, including places like High Force and the nearby Cauldron Snout, with their spectacular waterfalls. Weardale is less known for its walking, but one not to be missed. Many a walk can be had here without bumping into a trail of fellow walkers.
